Third Grade
Mrs. Emma Straatmann
My name is Emma Straatmann and began working as the Learning Consultant for St. John’s in 2019. Beginning in August of 2023 I will be the 3rd grade teacher. I fell in love with St. John’s when I started dating my husband, Austin, whose family is a part of this wonderful parish. I loved the church, the atmosphere, and the people. Once I married my husband in 2018, we quickly became parish members. Since then, we moved to Villa Ridge and currently have a little farm of our own with cattle and sheep. We welcomed our daughter into the world in July of 2020 and our second daughter in February 2022. We love to camp and be outdoors- especially near water!
3rd Grade Curriculum
Here is just a small glimpse of what we learn every year in our classroom.
Math:
We have Saxon Math. Each day we learn a new skill along with reviewing the old ones. Every day we work with the calendar, money, and time. We skip count, have a daily number pattern, problem of the day, and we work with the basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts.
English:
We focus on the parts of a sentence; nouns, verbs, adjectives, punctuation, etc. We also work through many different projects using the writing process.
Reading:
Each week we focus on a story and work on different reading and comprehension skills. We cover a wide variety of genres. We practice phonetic spelling patterns and study different word parts. We also incorporate independent reading through book clubs and book reports
Science:
We study Life, Earth, and Physical Science. We participate in STEM activities as well as different experiments.
Social Studies:
We learn about different types of communities, map skills, the history of our country and our state, and government.
Religion:
We learn about Jesus’ mission and teachings, the Holy Spirit, Mary, and we review the Sacraments. We also learn about the Feasts and Seasons of the Church Year, the Rosary, and prayer.
