Fifth Grade
Ms. Emily Patke
Hello! My name is Emily Patke. I am the 5th grade teacher, and this is my 8th year teaching. Besides teaching 5th grade, I also teach 4th grade Science. I am a lifelong member of St. John’s and a proud graduate from here as well. I have always wanted to become a teacher and to teach here at St. John’s. My family’s involvement with the church and school started all the way back to my great grandparents. St. John’s is such a wonderful school community to be a part of. We really are the hidden gem in Franklin County. The families are amazing and are so great to work with! I really could not imagine teaching anywhere else!
5th Grade Curriculum
Social Studies:
We begin each year with learning about early civilizations and work our way up to the American Revolution and the Declaration of Independence. Throughout our lessons we read from the book, take notes, and answer questions from the text. Assessment of knowledge includes a variety of projects and tests.
English – Writing and Grammar
Notes given for each concept in grammar (spiral notebook)
Exercises taken from book together/short assignment or worksheet
Tests given at end of each grammar chapter
Writing assignments are often done in class – stories, essays, and letters
Mathematics (Jill Schmelz)
Topics include computation for addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and properties, computation using 3- and 4-digit numbers, rounding and estimation, perimeter and area, fractions and decimals, geometry, numbers to hundred billion, problem solving, weights and measures, and solving equations.
Religion – Liturgy, Parts of the Mass, Sacraments, Liturgical Year
Text is read together – important concepts are highlighted in book
Notes and questions are given for each chapter (spiral notebook)
Test of multiple choice and essay questions are given at the end of each Unit. Family Life is taught in the Spring
Reading
For reading we use the Journey series, which include a wide array of different stories from different genres. Weekly tests are given to see how the student comprehends the story and to test their knowledge of the different elements of stories such as plot, sequence of events, theme, and other elements of reading. Spelling is also included with the Journeys and students are given a weekly test in that area as well. Each month students are required to complete a book report. The type of book report will change throughout the year.
Science
In science we cover a wide array of topics. Such as states of matter, physical and chemical changes, solar system, Earth’s systems, and human impacts on those systems. We do a variety of science experiments, along with questions to answer about our lesson. Tests will be taken after each chapter is covered. Tests include multiple choice, matching, fill in the blank, short answer, and essay questions.
