Sixth Grade

Mrs. Brianna Hall

My name is Brianna Hall, and I am the 6th grade homeroom teacher. I grew up in Villa Ridge and attended St. John’s with my four siblings. My family has belonged to this parish for over 60 years. I always knew since I was young that I wanted to be a teacher and teach here at St. John’s. I love the family atmosphere and the kindness that never seems to stop. Not only am I a teacher here but my two boys attend here too, and I am forever grateful to the staff at St. John’s for helping mold my boys into talented, smart, and kind human beings.

I began teaching computers at St. John’s in 2019 and became the 6th grade teacher in 2022. I also teach middle school Social Studies and Reading/Grammer.

In 6th grade at St. John’s we consider it to be “middle school.” It is a step up in the school and us middle school teachers pride ourselves in getting the students prepared for high school and life in general. We take our job very seriously and strive in teaching our students responsibility.

Among all of the subjects that 6th grade is taught  they also are a part of the Kindness Club that I run. We spread kindness to our peers, teachers, parishioners, and more. They also participate in bimonthly team building activities with 7th and 8th grade to boost morale and self-confidence.

6th Grade Curriculum

Religion

The sixth-grade program of ‘Christ Our Life” series is devoted to the study of God’s saving love as it is revealed in Sacred Scripture, particularly the Old Testament. The textbook, ‘God Calls a People’ is designed to help the students increase their knowledge of salvation history so that they may respond to God with ever-deepening love and gratitude.

· Students attend Mass twice a week and participate in preparing and evangelizing the Liturgy during the year.

 · Students visit the Blessed Sacrament during the year and participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation at least twice a year

Science

Science focuses on Earth Science. We learn about weather, rocks and minerals, volcanoes, and the solar system, plus much more. During the year we will do projects and experiments to better understand the curriculum.

Writing/Grammer

In middle school English, we work on grammar and writing skills. I prepare the middle school students by giving them the tools they will need in the future. I strive to do 3 days of writing and 2 days of grammar each week. They are both very important and work together. I believe this is the best way to achieve all English goals.

For writing, I use many different types of writing assignments. Some of these include personal narratives, creative writing, and research papers. I also include some fun activities such as mock interviews and how-to presentations. I encourage the students to read all their work aloud to help with their public speaking skills.

For grammar, we learn about the parts of speech among other things. I have them work on proofreading sheets to improve their editing skills. They will put their skills to the test when they peer review each other's writings.

Reading/Spelling

Reading class consists of novels picked by Mrs. Hall from outstanding award-winning authors with amazing stories to tell. We read chapter books and complete reading packets and brainstorm together about these books. We also cover poetry and spelling. Our spelling consists of a book called Wordly Wise. Wordly Wise is aimed to improve your child’s vocabulary, spelling, and general understanding of words. It is a great textbook to have in the classroom. Students are also expected to complete a monthly book report over a book of their choice in their reading level each month.

Social Studies

Study Geography were we cover major countries and discuss their political and physical geography, climates, and cultures. Various projects are done throughout the year to keep our students engaged and actively learning.
